Volfied is an action arcade game designed by Fukio Mitsuji and released by Taito in 1989.
The game takes place in the planet called Volfied which is located in another galaxy. Volfied has been invaded by an unknown alien force. The few remaining Volfied inhabitants are hiding underground. They have managed to send a SOS signal to one of their spaceships named “The Monotros” and asked for help to defeat alien invaders and save the home planet. The pilot flies to Volfied in order to eliminate the alien threat and save the planted Volfied and its people.
The player controls "The Monotros" that can move around the edges of the game area. Holding down the space bar along with arrow keys allows the space ship to move into unclaimed territory and draw lines in an attempt to get back to dry land and close off an area. If completed, the captured area becomes unusable (replaced with the graphic of the next level.) to the aliens and knocks off a few more per cent in the quest to close them down.
It is complicated slightly by the fact that the big main alien you are trying to trap has lots of attendant little aliens which do their best to harass you. This isn't so bad because you are only vulnerable when trying to close off a new area of the screen with one exception. This exception is Shield Countdown (Picture 1). If you can not claim at least 80% of a level's area within the time specified by Shield Countdown you will become vulnerable to attack from aliens too resulting in immediate alien attack and losing one of your space ships. Move very fast and be quick about jumping up to the next level without any loss.

Energy Pyramids (grey squares) will appear in the open play area, and sometimes disappear. If you manage to trap one of these while closing off some space then a bonus is revealed. This bonus can be some extra points or a booster that can help you to deal with annoying little aliens.
You get 2,000 points for each 'normal' alien you trap. The bonus for trapping the major alien varies on how little space he is trapped in - the smaller the area, the bigger the bonus.
Trapping the big alien is not the only way of closing him down. On some levels, if you collect a Energy Pyramid with a signaling red-light you can get a super weapon, which can destroy the big boss. This gives you so many points you could probably drown under the weight of them.
1- Aliens can close you down by coming into direct contact with your space ship Monotros when you move into the unclaimed territory.
2- Aliens can close you down by placing a red sphere to the red energy line you leave behind when your space ship moves into the unclaimed territory. The red sphere moves very fast and tries to reach you before you managed to get back to dry land.
3- The big bosses also have the ability to fire. If their fire comes in contact with the red energy line you leave behind when your space ship moves into the unclaimed territory, a red sphere will start following you starting from the touching point of red energy line and the fire of the big boss. The red sphere moves very fast and tries to reach you before you managed to get back to dry land.
As it has been mentioned before, Energy Pyramids can be some extra points or a booster to help you to deal with aliens. Let’s take a look at each of them in detail.
